Smart Hour: Yellow Rose and Copper Vase

Ambitiously, Lillian chose this image from Soon Y. Warren's "Vibrant Flowers in Watercolor":


This is not my first time at the rodeo with this particular reference picture. I have never been able to deconstruct and reconstruct rose petals in my head. They just turn into squiggles an inch and a half behind my eyes. I've never been thrilled with how my attempts to draw this rose come out.


Lillian chose to do her own background, a step which I admired.


Shortly after her attempt to reproduce the shading on the copper pot, she announced she didn't care for the way the colors blended on the butcher paper and voted we do a drawing that was "just our own thing". She dug out some card stock for herself and was much happier with the colors on this one:
